Students state-wide stage walk out Feb. 4

 From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, the Washington State University Vancouver campus held a student walkout to protest the 14% tuition rise.

Centralia student directly impacted by earthquake

The recent earthquake in Haiti directly impacted Centralia student Nouhoum Sidibe, whose father works in Port-au-Prince as the assistant to the President of the United Nations. He has been working there for seven months.

“Someone said, ‘Nouhoum, did you know there was an earthquake in Haiti today?’ No, I did not know,” said Sidibe. “I tried to call my dad all night; he didn’t answer. I didn’t want to believe it.”

Al Stewart to perform in Corbet Theater Jan. 23

Al Stewart will perform in the Corbet Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. for the President’s Scholarship performance, “An Acoustic Evening with Al Stewart.” Dave Nachmanoff will accompany Stewart.

Manfest student performers receive standing ovation

Manfest was a catchy, exciting look at the talents of male choir students across four counties.

“It was a lot of fun,” said high school student Chris Ridgley. “We all had a great time.”

The performance took place at 7 p.m. Jan. 14, but the event lasted from 9 a.m. until the performance’s culmination with a cappella group Groove For Thought at 8:30 p.m.

Earthquake devastates Haiti

 On Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 4:53 p.m., a 7.0 earthquake occurred in Haiti six miles from its capitol Port au Prince.

Fiscal boot camp to teach students money managing skills

Speaker and author Larry Kahaner will host a presentation titled "The Seven Money Secrets They Say You're Too Young to Know" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21 in NSC 121.

Student ID cards available in Student Center

Students without an identification card can get one in the Student center until 4 p.m. daily, with expanded hours on Jan. 19 and 20.

Student email available

 Over the past few months, there has been some confusion about the student email system. Students did not know where to receive their log in information, or how to access their account.

However, your student email is ready and waiting for your log in. Your email address is firstname.lastname@student.centralia.edu and your password is YYMMDD, your birth year, month and date. Your account can be accessed at http://login.live.com.

You need to change your password once logged on, enter your birth year and country, then click accept. The “Mail” tab will take you to your inbox.

There are many reasons to use a student email, such as adding professionalism during email correspondence.

Manfest encourages students to pursue music

Manfest, an event that focuses on music suited to the male vocal range, will showcase 14 choir groups from Western Washington on Thursday, Jan. 14. Students, grades 8 through 12, will perform three pieces of music during the first half of the concert and Seattle a cappella group, Groove For Thought, will perform during the second half. The show begins at 7 p.m. in Corbet Theatre.

“Eating, breathing, speaking and living the way other people do changes a person,” said Anthropology Professor Greg van Alstyne. “Students get new experiences and insights into other cultures, and they can learn from that.”

Jazz band to perform at Ford's Prairie Elementary

The Centralia College Jazz Band will perform for the student body at Ford’s Prairie Elementary School on Tuesday, Jan. 12. The performance is meant to entertain but also to empower and educate students where they may only have limited opportunity for musical growth and enrichment.

The Tutoring Center in Kemp 103 will reopen for Winter quarter on Monday, Jan. 11. It will be open to students daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
