Martinez shares his story of recovery from Iraq at the college November 4

Corbet Theatre will present J.R. Martinez at 7 p.m., November 4 in which Martinez will discuss his road to recovery and what he learned from the severe wounds he received while serving in Iraq.

Martinez enlisted in the United States Army in September 2002 and underwent Basic and Advanced Training at Fort Benning, Georgia where he gained skills as an 11-B Infantryman.

And after reporting to Fort Campbell in January of 2003, he was assigned to his unit; 2/5/02 Delta Company.

He was deployed to Iraq in March of that same year and less than a month later, on April 5, 2003, Martinez was driving a Humvee when his left front tire hit a land-mine.

He suffered severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body as well as smoke inhalation. Eventually Martinez arrived at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, TX to begin his road to recovery.

And never did he realize what a long road it would be, spending 34 months at BAMC and undergoing 32 different surgeries including skin grafts and cosmetic surgery.
   
After his recovery, Martinez has made it his goal to inspire the lives of others through his amazing story of resilience, perseverance and optimisim which he can do in Spanish and English.

Due to his positive attitude Martinez has spoken to over 450 groups across the country.

His audiences include a wide range of groups including Tony Robbins seminars, national business conferences, churches, veterans groups, civic groups, sporting events, schools and many other public and private organizations.

He's also made hundreds of broadcast appearances as well as been interviewed by hundreds of print and online reporters about his war experiences and his personal road to recovery such as ABC, MSNBC, CBS, FOX News, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Deborah Norville Show, Univision, Good Morning America, NBC, The Washington Post, New York Times, Associated Press, Yahoo and most recently People Magazine.

Anyone can come to the event and the cost for admission is five dollars.
