STP Cyclists at Centralia College

Every year, more than 10,000 participants have had the courage to cycle 200 miles in two days from Seattle to Portland (STP). People from around the country attend this event to raise money for charities, for their own health, and to view scenic Washington and Oregon.

Throughout the two days, cyclists ride through 12 cities with many stops along the way that provide food, beverages and lodging. For six consecutive years, Centralia College has been the official midpoint for STP serving many of the cyclists that stop in for a short break and an overnight stay.

The Centralia Police Department's Reserve Officers sponsored a bike corral, which was a gated area for bicycles to stow their bikes safely for a low fee.

Centralia College volunteers assisted the cyclist and offered food, massages, information on lodging, free drinks (from Dairygold); and were broadcasting the Tour de France in the cafeteria.

The college gym provided space for indoor camping and hot showers for those who stayed until Sunday. Private housing was available through the Centralia – Chehalis Chamber of Commerce.

Group Health by Cascade Bicycle Club has sponsored the Seattle to Portland event for the last 31 years. Ages of this year's participants ranged from 22 months to 85 years.
