On a very warm Saturday, wet sleeping bags, bike rims, pots, pans and other discarded trash were found during the second clean-up this year of China Creek buy the Centralia Stream Team.
Lead by City of Centralia employee Kim Ashmore, 31, volunteers and college students helped clean out the creek from the east side rail yards to the Chehalis River by the water treatment plant. Volunteers were seen knee deep in water retrieving various bits of garbage from the bed and banks of the creek. More than a couple had wet socks at the end of the clean-up.
China Creek runs right through Centralia College campus. The most visible piece is by the New Science Center on the corner of Washington Ave. and Centralia College Blvd.
After the garbage was picked up, volunteers were treated to lunch. A few trivia questions were asked and those with correct answers won Stream Team water bottles.
According to Ashmore, another China Creek clean-up will be scheduled in June. The team is searching for a used canoe or kayak to help in cleaning the two other creeks in Centralia as their banks are muddy and extremely difficult to clean-up on foot.
The team was awarded Municipal Excellence Award from the Association of Washington Cities for its efforts in cleaning up China Creek .
